Myopia, or nearsightedness, is not just needing glasses or contacts to see far. Myopia is actually a risk factor for eye diseases such as retinal detachments, cataracts, glaucoma, and myopic maculopathy. With increased screen time and less time spent outdoors, myopia has dramatically risen in recent years. That’s the bad news. The good news is that we now have tools to slow down myopia progression in kids aged 8-12, thus lowering their risks for eye diseases. Through either the use of a daily eye drop, or special soft contact lenses, patients can expect to see a reduction in myopia progression by as much as 58%.
